Heritage consultant Cambridge
Heritage consultants in Cambridge.
Listed building consent, heritage impact assessments and conservation advice across Cambridge city, the historic core and the surrounding villages. College buildings, market town centres and rural listed stock.
We respond within one working day leading to a no obligation outline approach.
Cambridge has a historic environment of exceptional quality and complexity. Few places compare.
The university colleges hold some of the finest medieval and early modern buildings in England, the city centre is one of the most studied historic townscapes in the country, and the surrounding villages contain a dense stock of rural listed buildings. We work across Cambridge city and South Cambridgeshire, advising owners, developers, housing associations, the university and college estates, and we know the conservation teams at Cambridge City Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council and Historic England’s East of England office.
Heritage consultancy in Cambridge
What we do in Cambridge.
1.
Listed Building Consent
Cambridge has a higher proportion of listed buildings than almost any other city in England. The colleges alone contain hundreds of scheduled monuments and listed structures. We are experienced in preparing listed building consent applications for university and college clients, for residential owners, and for commercial property in the city centre and the surrounding market towns.
2.
Heritage Statements
Cambridge City Council’s conservation area policies are among the most detailed in the country. Applications within the city’s ten conservation areas, and for development affecting their setting, require a Heritage Statement — now formally called a Heritage Impact Assessment following the NPPF update — that engages seriously with the significance of the local historic environment. We write with precision and without unnecessary length.
3.
Significant Heritage Assets
Development proposals that could affect Cambridge’s more significant assets, the scheduled monuments in the city centre or the setting of the university colleges, require a heritage impact assessment. We produce assessments that are proportionate, evidence-based and written to withstand scrutiny at appeal.
4.
Conservation Management Plans
The university colleges, Cambridge City Council, and major institutional landowners in the area are increasingly required to hold Conservation Management Plans. We produce CMPs that are genuinely functional, clear in their analysis of significance and practical in their policies for future change.
5.
Solar for Listed Buildings
The skyline of the historic core, the views across the Backs and the many college roofs visible from the river make solar siting in Cambridge especially sensitive. Panels on a listed building, or within its setting, usually need listed building consent and often planning permission. We identify roof areas hidden behind parapets or within courts, consider outbuildings and ground mounted options in the surrounding villages, and present the energy generated as a public benefit to be weighed against any harm.
We work across Cambridge city and the wider region. If your area is not listed, we still work there.
That includes Cambridge city centre and all ten conservation areas, South Cambridgeshire’s villages and market towns, Ely and the Ely area, St Ives and Huntingdonshire, Saffron Walden and North Essex, Newmarket and West Suffolk, and the Fens. We also produce historic building recording to CIFA standards, up to a full Level 4 analytical record where the planning condition requires it.
Featured East Anglia project
A Grade II listed timber-framed building in Suffolk, resolved.
Chinnerys
A Grade II listed 16th-17th century timber-framed building in Cavendish. Unauthorised works regularised. Both applications granted.
Heritage Unlimited were engaged to resolve enforcement issues and regularise unauthorised internal and external works to Chinnerys, a Grade II listed timber-framed building in the village of Cavendish, near Sudbury. The building’s vernacular character, including historic timber framing and herringbone brick infill, required careful assessment to distinguish later interventions from original fabric. Both applications were granted.
