Heritage consultant Brighton
Heritage consultants in Brighton & Hove.
Listed building consent, heritage impact assessments and advice on the renovation and restoration of listed buildings across Brighton, Hove and the surrounding Sussex conservation areas. Regency terraces, seafront listed stock and the wider South Downs.
We respond within one working day leading to a no obligation outline approach.
Brighton & Hove has one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings of any local authority in England. We work across all of it.
The city’s Regency and Victorian townscape, the seafront terraces, the squares and crescents of Kemp Town and Brunswick, and the grand hotels along the front, is matched by an exacting conservation regime. Our work ranges from modest alterations to listed townhouses to substantial proposals in the most sensitive parts of the conservation area, and extends across East and West Sussex, Lewes, Chichester, Arundel and the Weald.
Heritage consultancy in Brighton
What we do in Brighton & Hove.
1.
Listed Building Consent
Brighton & Hove City Council has a conservation team that takes a close interest in applications affecting the city’s listed buildings. We know what level of detail the local planning authority expects, and we prepare applications that are comprehensive without being overlong. For straightforward works, we can move quickly.
2.
Heritage Statements
The city’s 34 conservation areas cover large parts of Brighton and Hove. Development within them, and in some cases development that merely affects their setting, requires a Heritage Statement — now formally called a Heritage Impact Assessment following the NPPF update. We write to the point, addressing the NPPF and the council’s own supplementary planning documents.
3.
Significant Heritage Assets
Proposals that could affect Brighton’s more significant assets, the Grade I Royal Pavilion, the listed seafront hotels, or the registered Brunswick Square, require proportionate heritage impact assessment. We assess significance, identify impact and set out mitigation in a format that satisfies both the local planning authority and Historic England.
4.
Conservation Management Plans
Brighton’s institutional property owners, the university, the NHS, the council itself, increasingly need Conservation Management Plans before works can proceed. We produce clear, usable documents that reflect genuine understanding of the building’s significance rather than generic templates.
5.
Solar for Listed Buildings
Many of the Regency and Victorian terraces of Brighton and Hove climb the hills above the seafront, so roofs are seen from far along the coast and from the streets below. Solar on a listed building, or within its setting, usually needs listed building consent and often planning permission. We look for valley roofs, rear slopes and outbuildings hidden from public view, and set out the public benefit of the clean energy generated so the council can weigh it against any harm.
We hold an active caseload across Brighton & Hove and the wider Sussex area. If your area is not listed, we still work there.
That includes all of Brighton & Hove’s conservation areas, Lewes and the Lewes District, Chichester, Arundel, Eastbourne, Hastings, Rye, the South Downs National Park, and the rural areas of East and West Sussex. We also carry out pre-works recording of listed buildings to CIFA standards across all of them.
Featured Sussex project
A Grade II* listed country house in West Sussex, secured.
Paxhill Park
A Grade II* listed country house and its historic parkland. Solar PV array on a listed estate. Listed building consent secured.
Heritage Unlimited provided heritage support for a solar PV array on the setting of Paxhill Park, a Grade II* listed country house in Mid Sussex. The project required a heritage impact assessment addressing the visual and setting impacts on the listed building and the historic parkland, delivered to a programme that worked with the client’s construction timeline.
