Heritage consultant Hertfordshire
Heritage consultants in Hertfordshire.
Listed building consent, heritage statements and conservation advice across Hertfordshire, from the timber-framed and Georgian fronted streets of Hitchin and St Albans to country houses, flint churches and the garden cities.
We respond within one working day leading to a no obligation outline approach.
Hitchin’s Grade I St Mary’s Church is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire, built on the wealth of the medieval wool trade. The town around it is just as rich.
Hertfordshire’s listed stock is a mix of medieval timber frames behind later brick fronts, coaching inns on the old roads north of London, malting towns such as Ware and Baldock, and great houses including Hatfield House and Knebworth House. St Albans adds its Cathedral and the Roman city of Verulamium, while Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City carry the planned housing of the early twentieth century. Our work runs from a single listed cottage to the reuse of whole commercial ranges.
Heritage consultancy in Hertfordshire
What we do in Hertfordshire.
1.
Listed Building Consent
Listed building consent in Hertfordshire is decided by the district and borough councils, so a scheme in Hitchin goes to North Hertfordshire Council while one in the Cathedral quarter goes to St Albans City and District Council. Each conservation team has its own expectations on joinery, roof coverings and internal plan form. We prepare applications with the drawings, schedules and justification the relevant officer needs.
2.
Heritage Statements
Work within a conservation area such as Hitchin town centre or St Albans, or in the setting of a listed building, needs a heritage statement that addresses the NPPF and the council’s local plan policies. Where an appraisal exists we write to it directly. At Bucklersbury in Hitchin our assessment found that part of the listing was wrong, which reshaped the scheme.
3.
Timber-Framed and Brick-Fronted Buildings
Many Hertfordshire town houses and inns are medieval or seventeenth century timber frames refronted in brick or render in the Georgian period, as seen along Hitchin’s Bancroft and the streets of Ware and Hertford. The frame, the later front and the changes between them all carry significance. We untangle the phasing so alterations, repairs and new openings can be justified.
4.
Conservation Management Plans
Estates, schools, churches and public bodies across the county own buildings such as Hatfield House, Knebworth House and the Lancasterian schoolroom at the British Schools Museum in Hitchin. A Conservation Management Plan gives these owners a shared understanding of significance to guide repairs, funding bids and change over time. We write plans that are clear and practical.
5.
Solar for Listed Buildings
Hertfordshire roofs are typically handmade clay peg tile or slate, and in compact town centres such as Hitchin and St Albans they are seen from the street and from church towers. In the Chilterns National Landscape around Tring and Berkhamsted, wider views carry extra weight. We look for rear slopes, valley roofs and outbuildings, and set out the public benefit of the clean energy generated under the NPPF.
We hold an active caseload across Hertfordshire and the wider Home Counties area. If your area is not listed, we still work there.
That includes Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City, Baldock, Royston and Ashwell in North Hertfordshire, St Albans and Harpenden, Hertford, Ware and Bishop’s Stortford in East Hertfordshire, Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Watford, Rickmansworth, and Berkhamsted, Tring and Hemel Hempstead in Dacorum. We also carry out pre-works recording of listed buildings to CIFA standards across all of them.
Featured Hertfordshire project
Six buildings, five of them listed, in the heart of Hitchin, given new life.
Nos. 2-8 Bucklersbury
The former Hawkins Department Store, a row of six adjoining buildings in the Hitchin Conservation Area. Restored and adapted for business units and new homes.
Heritage Unlimited prepared a Heritage Assessment at pre-application stage and found that the listings for the site were partly incorrect, with one early twentieth century building not listed at all. That allowed a contextual two storey replacement and an extra home. North Hertfordshire Council noted the full understanding of significance at pre-application, and our Heritage Statement supported a successful application.
