8 Eden Street

Kingston upon Thames
Conservation Area

Heritage Unlimited were initially approached to produce a Heritage Assessment of two neighboring properties in Kingston Town Centre, numbers 8 and 10 Eden Street, to explore the possibility of a roof extension to form additional residential apartments.

Through comprehensive research of existing and historic development it was identified that the properties are situated within Kingston Old Town Conservation Area and encircled by numerous listed buildings and buildings of townscape merit (non-designated heritage assets). Analysis of the building morphology and existing fabric was used in addition to thorough investigation of key viewpoints to inform a Heritage Assessment to support a pre-application submission.

Heritage Unlimited provided design guidance for changes to the buildings which would preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area thus meeting the minimum requirement of the statutory test provided by section 72 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. This culminated in the creation of a proposal for a roof extension to number 8.

A strong argument was then made in the supporting Heritage Statement based upon the identified detracting appearance of the property and the opportunity the scheme presented for the enhancement of the conservation area through high quality, heritage-led design. This was further assisted by the form and context of surrounding properties and related planning history and the creation of additional housing to an area highly in demand.

Following involvement this engaging project, Heritage Unlimited were delighted to learn that permission was granted for the roof extension in January 2023.
