Many of our current commercial and retail units are housed within our historic assets, which can present the retailer with a specific set of challenges when working with the fabric of the building and any constraints it may present. Heritage Unlimited were contacted to support and submit a planning application at William Street in Knightsbridge for a shop fit out involving internal works to ground and basement floors and an associated advertisement consent to the exterior.
The site was a mid-terrace pair of units combined following an extensive refurbishment as part of a larger redevelopment for a range of properties along Knightsbridge and William Street. As such, the units had been stripped back internally to reveal their original brickwork alongside the modern works undertaken during the larger redevelopment. One of the units in this Georgian terrace was a Grade II listed building and the site was within the Albert Gate Conservation Area, named from the grand entrance to Hyde Park, an area closely tied to the history of Hyde Park and its influence on demand and style in the area. The significance of the area and the grade II listing required Heritage Unlimited to complete a comprehensive Heritage Statement and fabric assessment to help inform and confirm the feasibility of the shop fit out which involved a mounted framework system and freestanding units to protect the historic elements of the brickwork.
